This document is intended to help new and existing My Travel Alerts users manage their accounts, saved routes and areas, and alert settings. Use the links below to quickly navigate to different portions of the guide.

Getting Started with My Travel Alerts

 

This section provides a brief overview of the main components of the My Travel Alerts website. This introduction will help you navigate the website, while each component is discussed in more detail in the sections below.

Create an Account

 

If you are new to My Travel Alerts, start by visiting 511.cotrip.org, and click the "Sign in" link in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Then, click the "Get Started" button, and enter your first name, last name, email address, and password. Your email address will become your user name and will be used for all email alerts. (Note that you’ll be able to add a cellphone for text alerts in a later step.)

Check the box next to "Sign me in automatically on this computer" if you want My Travel Alerts to remember your account information the next time you visit the site.



Press the "Create my account" button to submit your information. You will receive an account-activation message at the email address you provided, asking you to read and accept the My Travel Alerts Terms of Use. Click the "Accept" link to activate your account.

You must activate your account within 24 hours or it will be deleted.

 Home Page

 

On the My Travel Alerts home page, you will find the main map (1), My Travel Alerts account signup/login link (2) and the menu (3).

 

·        Main Map – used to view your custom routes and areas

·        My Travel Alerts sign up/login link – used to create or modify My Travel Alerts accounts, or sign in to your existing account

·        Menu – main navigation tool used to search for areas or routes, manage your Favorites List, or watch Help Tutorials

Now let’s take a look at icons within the menu.

 

  Route and Area Search

 

You can search for routes and areas by selecting  , then entering a location within the state of Colorado in the Zoom to a place or Pick a route search boxes. After clicking search, you can save your selection to the My Favorites List for quick navigation, and to schedule email or SMS alerts.

Favorites My Favorites List

 

You can save custom routes and areas to your account, and they will appear in your favorites list. You can click  Favorites  from anywhere in the My Travel Alerts site to navigate to this page. Also, by selecting  http://cotg.carsprogram.org/images/three-bar-button.png  next to each saved area or route, you can manage the saved entry and schedule alerts.  

 

IMPORTANT NOTES:

ü You will not begin receiving alerts for your preferred routes and areas until you set up your account preferences and schedule alerts. See “Changing Account Settings” and “Schedule Alerts”).

ü Truckers recommendation: set alert schedules from 12a to 12a to avoid missing critical updates for restrictions affecting your saved routes and areas.

My account settings My Account Settings

 

You can modify your account info, email address, alert-severity level and password by selecting My account settings in the upper right corner of the My Travel Alerts page. Also, on the My alerts tab, you can sign up for SMS alerts and modify your alert settings. The following alert options are available:

 

·        Critical  Events either planned or unplanned lasting greater than 30 minutes that have high impact to the roadway, or where traffic is either fully detoured, stopped, or experiencing a significant delay

·        Urgent Events either planned or unplanned that generally impact only local traffic, or where traffic is moving with some delay around an event that has a duration under 30 minutes

·        Routine Routine events of short duration (usually a few minutes) or have minimal impact to traffic.

·        Oversize/Overweight route and area restriction alerts for commercial vehicles

·        Commercial Chain Law route and area chain and traction restrictions for commercial vehicles

·        Statewide Emergency messages – 24/7 reports affecting the State of Colorado, such as Public Service Announcements, Special Events, and Amber Alerts

Managing My Travel Alerts Account

 

You can create a personal My Travel Alerts account to save your favorite routes and areas. This section includes information on:

 

·        Logging into your account

·        Changing account settings

·        Password recovery

·        Deleting your account

 

 

Logging into your account

 

If you have an active My Travel Alerts, click the "sign in" link in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then, enter your email address and password into the boxes provided.

Changing account settings

 

You can change your account settings at any time. To open the Account Settings page, click the My account settings icon in the upper-right corner of the screen and select "My account settings."

 

On the Account Settings page you can:

 

ü Change your first and last name

ü Update your email address

ü Modify your password

ü Delete your account

ü Modify your alert settings (via the My Alerts tab)

Password recovery

 

If you forget your password, click the "Forgot your password?" link on the Sign In window or Account Settings window. You will receive an email with directions for resetting your password.

Deleting your account

 

You can delete your account from the Account Settings window by clicking the "Delete my account" link. Enter your password in the confirmation window, select "Confirm," and your account will be deleted.

Saving Route and Area Reports

General information

 

My Travel Alerts personalizes your experience by allowing you to save custom routes and areas that you travel most often. This section includes information on:

 

·        Creating a route

·        Getting driving directions

·        Saving a route

·        Saving an area

·        Saving a custom area

·        Managing your saved routes, places and custom areas

Creating a route

 

To start creating your personalized route, click  in the Menu header. Then, type an origin and destination in the boxes labeled A and B, and click Search. Your route will highlight on the main map, and the distance and travel time will appear in the Menu panel.

 

 

Helpful Tips:

v You can also right click on the map to set your origin and destination.

v You can enter several location types in the search boxes, including street addresses, cities, and landmark names.

v Click and drag to update your highlighted route.

Getting driving directions

 

After you have created a route, click  Menu  and select "Show directions" to view step-by-step driving directions for that route.

 

Driving directions can be hidden at any time by clicking  Menu   and selecting "Hide directions".

Saving a route

 

After defining your route, click “Save this route" to add to your Favorites list.

 

Helpful Tips:

v To save a route, you must be logged in to your My Travel Alerts account.

v The saved route name will auto-populate with the entries in Point A and Point B, but you can manually enter a custom name (e.g. Home to Airport).

v Saving a route will not enable alerts. Please follow the steps below to enable alerts for saved routes and areas.

Saving an area

 

To select an area, click   in the Menu header. Then, enter a location in the “Zoom to a place” search box and click Search. Your area will appear on the map.

 

Click “Save this area" to add to your Favorites list.

 

Helpful Tips:

v After entering an area, you can zoom and drag the map as needed. Select “List reports in new map view” before saving your new selection.

v You can enter several location types in the search box including street addresses, cities, and landmark names.

v To save a route, you must be logged in to your My Travel Alerts account.

v The saved area name will auto-populate, but you can manually enter a custom name (e.g. My neighborhood).

v Saving an area will not enable alerts. Please follow the steps below to enable alerts for saved routes and areas.

Saving a custom area

To define a custom area, click Favorites  in the Menu header, and click “Define and save a custom area.” Then, double-left-click on the map to begin drawing the outline of your custom area. Complete your custom area by clicking on the first point of the shape you have drawn.

 

Click “Save this area" to add to your Favorites list.

 

Helpful Tips:

v To save a custom area, you must be logged in to your My Travel Alerts account.

v By drawing a custom area, you will receive alerts for all highways and interstates within the defined area.

v Saving a custom area will not enable alerts. Please follow the steps below to enable alerts for saved routes and areas.

Managing your saved routes, areas and custom areas

 

Click Favorites in the Menu header, to open your Favorites list.  Click  http://cotg.carsprogram.org/images/three-bar-button.png  to view Edit and Delete options for your saved entry.

 

Editing a saved route:

1.     Click Favorites in the Menu header, to open your Favorites list.

2.     Find the saved route that you would like to edit and click  http://cotg.carsprogram.org/images/three-bar-button.png.

3.     Click “Edit this route.”

4.     Your saved route will highlight on the main map.

5.     You can click and drag your highlighted route to update the course.

6.     You can update the saved name of your route.

 

Editing a saved area:

1.     Click Favorites in the Menu header, to open your Favorites list.

2.     Find the saved area that you would like to edit and click  http://cotg.carsprogram.org/images/three-bar-button.png.

3.     Click “Edit this area.”

4.     Your saved area will highlight on the main map.

5.     You can update the saved name of your area.

6.     To update the boundaries of the saved area, please delete the original entry and start again.

 

Editing a saved custom area:

1.     Click Favorites in the Menu header, to open your Favorites list.

2.     Find the saved custom area that you would like to edit and click  http://cotg.carsprogram.org/images/three-bar-button.png.

3.     Click “Edit this area.”

4.     Your saved custom area will highlight on the main map.

5.     You can right-click on a point and click “Delete point” to modify the area shape.

6.     You can left-click and drag a point to update the area shape.

7.     You can update the saved name of your custom area.

 

Helpful Tips:

v To view and modify saved routes, areas and custom areas, you must be logged in to your My Travel Alerts account.

v Click on any of your favorites to view current travel time and directions.

v While editing a saved route, area or custom area, you can click “Cancel” at any time to delete your changes.

Managing Alert Settings & Scheduling Route and Area Alerts

 

General information

 

My Travel Alerts allows you to sign up to receive email and/or SMS alerts for incidents along your saved routes and areas. This section includes information on:

 

·        Registering your cellphone for SMS alerts

·        Managing your alert settings

·        Scheduling alerts

Registering your cellphone for SMS alerts

 

Click My account settings  in the upper right corner of the screen and select "My account settings." Then, select the "My alerts" tab. 

To sign up for text alerts:

1.     Select the "Yes" button

2.     Enter your cellphone number and service carrier

3.     Click the "Verify Now" button to send a verification code to your cellphone number.

4.     Enter the verification code you receive via text in the verification box.

5.     Click “Save changes.”

6.     Navigate to the your Favorites list.

7.     Enable SMS alerts for your saved routes and areas.

 

Helpful Tips:

 

v To sign up for alerts, you must be logged in to your My Travel Alerts account.

v Email alerts will be sent to the address you used to create your account.

v Registering your cellphone will not enable alerts for your saved routes and areas. Please follow the steps below to enable alerts for saved routes and areas

Managing your alert settings

 

Click My account settings  in the upper-right corner of the screen and select "My account settings." Then, select the "My alerts" tab. 

Scroll down to “Send me reports.” In this section you can:

 

ü Modify you’re the severity level of your traffic and travel alerts (Critical, Urgent, Routine)

ü Sign up for Truckers specific reports (Oversize/Overweight and Commercial Chain Law)

ü Enable Statewide Emergency messages (24/7)

 

To modify your alert settings:

1.     Locate the type of alert you would like to receive.

2.     Click the check box next to the alert type.

3.     Click “Save changes.”

4.     Navigate to your Favorites list.

5.     Enable SMS alerts for your saved routes and areas.

 

Helpful Tips:

 

v All users will receive Critical traffic and travel alerts by default on their routes and areas where alerting is enabled.

v To modify your alert settings, you must be logged in to your My Travel Alerts account.

v Modifying your alert settings will not enable alerts for your saved routes and areas. Please follow the steps below to enable alerts for saved routes and areas.

v Statewide emergency messages are sent regardless of if you have saved routes or areas.

v Email and SMS alerts will only send for new and updated events that occur during the days and times you selected.

v Truckers recommendation: set alert schedules from 12a to 12a to avoid missing critical updates for restrictions affecting your saved routes and areas.

Scheduling Alerts

 

To schedule an alert:

 

1.     Click  to navigate to your Favorites list

2.     Find the favorite route, area or custom area for which you’d like to schedule an alert.

3.     Click  http://cotg.carsprogram.org/images/three-bar-button.png   and select “Schedule alerts.”

4.     Select the days of the week and time of day at which you'd like to get alerts.

5.     Select email alerts, text alerts, or both.

6.     Click "Save."

 

Helpful Tips:

v In your Favorites list, a   http://cotg.carsprogram.org/images/favorites/bell-black.png  will appear next to each saved route, area or custom area that has scheduled alerts.

v You can disable alerts at any time by clicking  http://cotg.carsprogram.org/images/three-bar-button.png   and selecting "Turn off alerts."

v Alerts will only send for the alert types that you set in My account settings.

v Email and SMS alerts will only send for new and updated events that occur during the days and times you selected.

v Truckers recommendation: set alert schedules from 12a to 12a to avoid missing critical updates for restrictions affecting your saved routes and areas.
